Lawmakers in our nations capital, Washington, DC are considering options to monetize on the inauguration of our first African American President, who will be inaugurated as the 44th president in January 2009. Said lawmakers are considering a proposition to extend the time which alcohol is no longer served by 3 hours, to a staggering and slurrily late 5AM.

The bars would stay open for 24 hours during January 17th and 21st, right around the time many out of towners will be in DC to watch history in the making as Barack Obama is inaugurated. The bill is proposed by DC Democrat Jim Graham (Ward 1). Jim, no doubt, is a drinker himself, and would love to see people still getting smashed at 5am. Hey, it’s not like anybody in DC works anyway, right?

I can’t help but think to myself that this may have some sort of racist undertones to it. Forgive me if I’m out of line, but to me it seems like their train of thought goes something like this: “Hey, Obama is black, a lot of his supporters are black, and black people love to get crunk all up in da club till da sun rises, namean?” So hey, let’s capitlize the fact that black people love 2 be in da club and gettin they drink on, and keep ‘em open till 6 in da moooooooooooornin’.

Right? I mean, I might be wrong here, but I’m pretty sure DC bars were not open 24 hours nor serving alcohol 3 hours later than, as far as I know, any other bars in any other city in the country in January 2000 when George W, Bush was inaugurated for the first time. That too, was a historic event, right? Sure, not quite as historic as a black president, but it was the first time the son of a former President had every been elected, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s just as much of a crowd grabber and people-bringer-inner (whatever) as Obama’s inauguration will be. Plus, Texans love to drink WAY more than black people, in my opinion.

At any rate, the bill hasn’t passed yet, but if it does, party on, DC.
