It’s getting to be that time again. Time for milk and cookies, buying people you don’t even like something that you hope they will hate, fat guys coming down chimneys after landing his flying rodent’s on household roofs across America. It’s Christmas time! One of the most popular things for an American (and presumably, most other nations that celebrate Christmas in one way or another) is to chop down a big ass tree, put it in your living room, throw some funky-colored lights on it, maybe some really thin glass balls, usually some annoying ass shiny string that you end up pulling out of your cats ass after he tries to move it through his lower intestines and fails. Servers are peculiar objects. They can sit there and do millions of calculations and operations per second, for months and months and months on end.  They will dutifully perform their tasks until they are interupted by some stupid user asking it to do something it doesn’t want to do. Until the power goes out due to a few inches of freshly fallen snow. The power outage should be no big deal, right? Datacenters are the most equipped buildings known to man that are able to deal with mother nature and her wicked ways, right? Sure. Datacenters have backup generators to keep all of the machines and power on and running flawlessly while the electricians work to restore power. What happens when a water main bursts and floods the room where the backup generator is and main circuitboards, causing the entire building to lose power?

I am an avid poker player. I’m not the greatest, I’m not the worst. I enjoy the game, I enjoy hanging out with friends and killing 12 hours of my life every other Saturday, and every Thursday, and playing poker and having a good time all around. Now I have been a smoker for well over 10 years. I respect that people don’t like the smell of cigarettes, or are allergic to smoke, etc. Thats all well and fine. But now the government is encroaching on my rights as a human being, to walk down the street I paid taxes for, and smoke a cigarette I paid MORE taxes for. It is getting out of hand. (more…)
